There is a moment in every hot towel shave when the world goes quiet.
It happens about ten minutes in, after the first warm towel has done its work and before the straight razor has begun its first pass. The room sounds different. The breath slows. The man in the chair often closes his eyes.
This is the moment, at The British Barbers, when a small dish appears on the side table — three Saudi dates, dark and unpretentious, beside a folded cloth.
You do not have to take one. Most men do.

A Hot Towel Shave Is Mostly Time
The straight razor does its work in about twelve minutes. The rest of the appointment — fifty minutes in total — is preparation, pause, and finishing.
The hot towel shave at the best barbershop in Singapore unfolds in this order:
- A first towel, drawn from steam, laid over the skin
- A short pause — for the heat to do what only heat can do
- A pre-shave oil massaged in slowly
- A second towel
- The lather, brushed in circles, never in straight lines
- The first pass, with the grain
- A second pause — and the dates
- The cross-grain pass
- A cold towel
- A balm appropriate to your skin
The pauses are not gaps in the service. They are the service.
Why a Saudi Date
The Saudi date is not a flourish. It is functional.
After the first razor pass, the skin is at its most receptive — opened by steam, soothed by lather, slightly tender. A small piece of natural sugar, eaten slowly, holds the calm. The body settles further. By the time the second pass begins, the man in the chair is in a different state from the one who arrived.
The dates we serve are sourced from Madinah — soft, dark, fresh. The kind that Mr Hassan El Gamal grew up eating after evening prayer.
The Standard Behind the Pause
Mr Hassan El Gamal trained in this method beginning in 1999 under the Egyptian Barbers Academy, and refined it through years in Dubai before opening The British Barbers in Singapore in 2004.
The straight razor is the same instrument practised on Jermyn Street in London for over a century. The date is from the tradition that runs from Cairo to Riyadh. The two have always belonged together in the chair of a Master Barber, and they belong together here.
He earned his Master Barber distinction in 2004 and holds guild accreditation in both the British Barbers Association and the Egyptian Barbers Academy.
What Our Gentlemen Notice
Read our Google reviews and the same words appear. Unhurried. Attention to detail. Felt like a small ceremony.
The hot towel shave produces these impressions not because of the shave itself, but because of what surrounds it. None of these can be hurried, and we do not try. This is what we mean by luxury male grooming — not the price, but the patience.
