A men’s hair colour appointment at The British Barbers takes about seventy-five minutes. The application is twenty. The processing time is forty. The rinse and finish are the last fifteen.
The forty minutes in the middle are the part nobody writes about. They are also, for most of our gentlemen, the most valuable part of the visit.

What Happens While the Colour Processes
Most colour services in Singapore fill the processing time with a magazine or a phone. We fill it differently.
A second cup of Ceylon tea is brought, fresh. The chair is reclined slightly. The conversation, if you want one, picks up where the pre-colour consultation left off. The conversation, if you do not, simply does not happen — and the silence is respected as fully as the talk.
What Men Actually Discuss in a Barber’s Chair
Twenty-five years of male grooming teaches a Master Barber what gentlemen talk about, and what they prefer to keep private. The topics that work in a heritage barbershop are mostly the same topics that work at a club bar. Travel. The neighbourhood. Sport. A book recently finished. A child entering university.
The topics that do not work — politics, religion, gossip, the private business of other clients — do not appear. A trained barber knows the difference instinctively, and our team has been trained personally by Mr Hassan El Gamal in exactly this.
This is part of why our Google reviews repeat the same words. Felt at ease. Professional. Not pushy.
When Hair Colour Is the Right Choice
The honest position at The British Barbers: most men look better with their grey than without it. Not all. Most.
Colour makes sense in three specific situations:
- Early grey — the man whose hair turned at thirty-two, ahead of his face
- Patchy grey — bright at the temples, full elsewhere
- The portrait moment — a wedding, a milestone, a photograph kept for twenty years
Outside these three, the steadier advice is usually a precision haircut on a known rhythm, and the dignity of the grey hair itself.
A Standard Refined Across Three Climates
Mr Hassan El Gamal began colouring men’s hair in 1999, training under the Egyptian Barbers Academy. He has worked across Egypt, Dubai, and Singapore — three climates with three different ways of ageing a head of hair.
He earned his Master Barber distinction in 2004 and is guild-accredited in both the British Barbers Association and the Egyptian Barbers Academy.
What Our Gentlemen Notice
Read the Google reviews and the same theme appears — they told me honestly whether I needed it. A colour service that says yes when the answer should be no is not luxury male grooming. It is the opposite.
Luxury is the freedom to be told the truth in your own chair. At the best barbershop in Singapore, that is the unspoken standard.
